Meet the Jazz Festival Bands

UAB Vulcan Jazz Collective - Alabama University

Dr. Steven Roberts is associate professor of jazz studies and trumpet at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is an active teacher and freelance musician and has performed with Marcus Roberts, Kirk Whalum, Martha and the Vandellas, Vincent DiMartino, Ryan Anthony, Jon Faddis, Allen Vizzutti, Cecil and Deedee Bridgewater, Chip McNeill, Jim Pugh, Charo and many others. 

Carlos Pino has over two decades of experience teaching guitar lessons. He is the Jazz Guitar professor as well as a Jazz combo coach at UAB. Carlos has a Masters of Music from Rutgers University providing a solid foundation for his teaching abilities. He regularly teaches jazz clinics and master classes locally and internationally.

Eric Hurley has recently graduated from UAB with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences. He will be continuing his interests in music as he researches HIV for a year before starting his MD/PhD program.

Joseph Lewis is an Undergraduate Student and Jazz Musician at UAB. He is studying for his Bachelor's of Arts in Music with a Concentration in Music Technology. Joseph plays Tenor Saxophone in the Jazz ensembles at UAB and has been playing saxophone for 12 years

Amber Frazier is a 3rd-year student at UAB studying music technology. Playing the Bass, she plans to continue gigging in the future while producing music with a studio.


The Purdue Jazz Combo- Purdue University

The six big bands in the Purdue Jazz Bands, under the direction of Dr. M. T. Mo Trout and Professor Jarrard Harris, boast a long and rich tradition of performing with some of the top artists in jazz today, and in venues around the world.  Since 2000, the band has performed at the Montreux, North Sea and Alpine International Jazz Festivals and has toured Italy, Spain, Portugal and Eastern Europe.

Marion Thomas “Mo” Trout Director. As a Professor of Music and director of the jazz program at Purdue University since 1997, Dr. Trout has directed all six of big bands at Purdue. Under his direction the Purdue Jazz Band has collaborated with numerous internationally known artists including Wycliff Gordon, Wayne Bergeron, Tia Fuller, Bob Mintzer, the New York Voices, Marvin Hamlisch, Tom Harrell, Allen Vizzutti, Eddie Daniels, Byron Stripling and Eric Marienthal to name only a few. 

Dr. Trout was honored as the Indiana Jazz Educator of the Year in 2015 by the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation.  He received his Bachelor of Music Education with Honors from Texas Christian University and both his Master of Music Education degree and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Texas.

Kevin Braner  Tenor saxophonist, He is in his third year of study at Purdue University as a major in Mechanical Engineering. He began studying woodwinds at the age of 8 and while playing in an outstanding high school jazz band in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois and had the opportunity to participate in many all-district and all-state bands and festivals.

Ben Hodonicky  Guitarist. He is in his senior year studying electrical engineering. In high school and at Purdue he has played with several rock and jazz groups, such as the Youth Jazz Ensemble of DuPage, the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Jazz Ensemble, and the Purdue Jazz Band.

Lucas Lewit plays bass and has just completed his first-year engineering studies at Purdue. Based outside Chicago, Illinois he writes, records, and produces his own music, and play gigs in the greater Chicago area. He has performed in all genres of music, from jazz and classical, all the way to metal. Originally a drummer, he views the bass as a unique percussive instrument with limitless potential in the intersection of rhythm and harmony.

Jackson Ferry-Zamora  Percussionist. His love for jazz was sparked at Rio Americano High School as part of a tight-knit community of dedicated musicians, where authenticity was valued above all. Daily, he was surrounded by the music of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, and countless other innovators.
